The upside of rhubarb

I wanted to write this post a while back but somehow at the end of the day after taking care of my one year old baby girl; the only thing I want to do is lay on the sofa and read a book. I am currently reading the Bell Jar; a good book but kind of dark.
The rhubarb cake was a success. I did not get enough rhubarb and only had 2 cups. Definitely 4 cups is the way to go as the recipe is mentioning. I wished I had known someone who wanted rhubarb cake as we had to much left other and couldn't eat it all. What a pity! If you end up making this cake, let me know how it went.

Mum knows best

I remember my mum telling me that life is a theater and no matter what be stolz (proud in German).

I remember my mum getting ready for the day doing her nails with one of her favorite shade of red and having in the drawers in the powder room hundreds of different shades of red of lipsticks in the apartment where she used to live.

I also remember that she liked her steak rare and when I told her that I like mine more well done, she put it back in the pan relunctantly. We used to go to a steakhouse Churrasko in Geneva quite often. I could see that she was looking forward to get her steak fix.

I remember walking down the streets of New York, 5th avenue, probably, my mum holding my hand tightly and then I got a badge Miss Piggy for President.

My mum used to do the brushing on my hair to perfection almost a la Nana Mouskiri and dressed me with ruffle blouse and corderoy pants and square heeled shoes.

She put me on skies at a very early age and very proudly she remembered till this time when I came back home with a gold medal. She was so proud of me. Every Wednesday on my day off of school, I used to take a bus with other kids and spent the whole day skiing in the mountains.

Thank you mum for loving me so much and bringing style in my life. I love you too, always will.

I love those knitted sweater; they are so beautiful and comfy with style.

1. One fashion trend I really regret is shoulder pads, but that was in the 80's; I was still looking for my style.

2. The one thing that always completes any outfit is wedges or clogs with heels and Eugenia Kim hat and a handbag of course. I love handbags. I am a girly girl.

3. I would describe my personal style as modern, pratical, feminine.

4. My fashion muse is, well I don't one person in mind specifically. Strong women like Madonna, Coco Chanel inspires me but I can't say that they are my fashion muses. I am inspired by fashion magazines, people walking in the streets, window displays, clothes that celebritries are wearing at the Oscars for example. After visualizing clothes, I come up with an outfit that suits me best and make me feel good wearing it.

5. If I could own one designer piece of clothing it would be a dress from Rodarte. Dresses from Rodarte are art pieces.

6. I would love to raid the wardrobe of Chloe Sevigny probably.

7. Today I am wearing black pants and top, brown leather jacket, my wooden clogs, my Carlos Falchi for Target bag and my Eugenia Kim cool hat.

Some lilies of the Valley for the first of May and other projects

For the first of May, it is good luck to give to someone some lilies of the Valley. I got some this Saturday at Armelle's chocolate fondue party. I love lilies of the Valley; it smells so good.
I am planning on finishing up my artwork for our living room and the baby sweater, the sooner the better. The baby is due on June 3rd but she is in charge. She will decide.

Lately, I am more into accessories and makeup as understandingly my clothes do fit the same but I have one more month to go so I am hanging in there.

I went to the farmers market and could not resit to buy myself some fresh roses and also some tulips. Of course, they are better quality than the ones you get at the deli not only by their fraguance but also their colors. I then went to a street fair and I had a crush on this vintage handbag by Ruth Saltz, so cool. I love the tiger's head and the aubergine color. It has a little bit of Carlos Falchi but it is unique of course. The salesperson was so nice. She told me the whole story about the designer who after making handbags decided to retire and paint.
I got the alpaca pouch at one of my favorite store called Makie. The store is awesome.

This afternoon, I found some old pictures. I like the one with my father when I was 18 years old and also the one with my grandmother on my father side when I was 22 years old. This is the only picture that I have of myself with my father. I love my father dearly; unfortunately he died in a car accident when I was 21 years old. I never had a chance to say goodbye. My grandmother is currently 98 years old. She is amazing. She is really into crafts and I remember when I was very young and making a doll; she helped me out with the apron for the doll. Back then, she was big into knitting, crochet. I love her dearly.

I happy with what I have. I feel personally that wishing I was something that I am not only brings frustrations in life. I am happy to be in good health. Health is everything in life. I hope it continues that way.

4. The Academy Awards are on tonight..will you watch?

Yes, I love to see what the actors are wearing. I love fashion.

5. Do you put your deodorant on before or after you get dressed?

I have some at home but forget to wear some. So, I don't wear deodorant. I don't like the fact that most of the time; it leaves white traces on clothes. I wear although everyday perfume that I carry in my purse. It is a mood booster. As Chanel said a woman with no perfume has no future.

6. Would you rather do the dishes or clean toilets?

Dishes if I really have to.

7. How much did you weigh at birth?

I have to ask my mum. She told me but I forgot.

8. If you could only buy one thing for the Spring/Summer season..what would it be?

Yesterday, a messenger delivered this artwork composed of ceramics created by my mother a long time ago. Brentano Frames in NYC did such a lovely job at framing those ceramics. Now, this new artwork is hanging in our foyer and I am very delighted and happy. I am sure my mother would love to hear that. I will need to hear her thoughts on that. I love my mother very much; I just wished she never got this nasty disease that is ALS. Anyway, thanks for reading. I am also including a picture of the Sonia Rykiel doll; this is all I could get at H&M since everything else was sold out. Also a picture of myself wearing blue eye shadow. I love blue; it is my favorite color and it puts me in a good mood. Now, I am off to the gym.

I collect images from magazines that inspires me. I love the shoes from Miu miu. The first time, I saw the fur; I couldn't believe it and it made me laugh. I thought this is very Pop Art. I like to look at it only; I won't wear it but I like when designers think outside of the box. I also LOVE Christian Lacroix. Since the age of 11, I have been collecting here and there images from his past collection and watching on style.com his runway show.

Latest movie I have seen, what inspires me

Beautiful movie. I love Emily Blunt, the costume, the story of course. We saw it last night; totally worth it.
Today it is drizzling and the sky is grey so I decided to have a hot chocolate from my favorite place called Jacques Torres Chocolate If you are visting New York City and you like chocolate; it is totally worth it to check the store out.

I received in the mail this gift from Weewonderfuls as as thank you gift as I was a pattern tester for one of her creations. I am a big fan of her dolls. I love dolls.

I am currently working on a baby blanket. I thought of knitting a multicolored one instead of the usual suspected color pink; since it will be a June baby. Interestingly enough, well I guess for me, I can hear my own heat beat through my ears. Apparently, it is normal my gynecologue told me as my heart is working harder.

This weekend, we saw on DVD the movie called Les Innocents ont les mains sales.
I love Romy Schneider. She is so elegant. Her style inspires me.

Two things I love around my home, what I am currently on

My mother gave me those ceramic tiles that she made a while back. Actually, she has been doing ceramics for twenty years. She does mugs, vases, plates.... I have a whole collection from her at home. I love this tiles and I am planning on turning into an artwork. I will ask a frame shop in NYC to do the work for me. I hope they can do it so then I will be able to hang it on the wall and look at it everyday. Wouldn't that be great?

I received this ceramic as a wedding gift from my mother. I grew up actually looking at it since it was in the living room of my mum's apartment. I love this sculpture although I am the only one in the house because it is kind of surrealistic. It is made by a Swiss artist. His name is Stucki from what I can read from his signature. Now, it is seating on a chest of drawers in our bedroom.

I am currently working on a baby blanket. It is a multicolored one since it will be a June baby. I wanted something fun and colorful and different from all pink; although I have to admit, most of the clothes I bought for her from Gap Kids are pink; I could not resist.

10 things that makes me happy

Danielle at www.dinosaurtoes.blogspot.com/ had the wonderful idea to write about ten things that makes her happy. So, following in the same path, I will do the same because this is fun.
Here there are:

1. Every morning, I like to look at the seagulls flying above my window. I like their spirit. It puts me in a good mood to watch them flying. My favorite birds are the woodpecker and also owls. Owls are so mysterious to me. There was a woodpecker living in a tree at one of my husband's friends place in Connecticut and you could hear him working. It is hilarious. A former coworker told me that owls watch on people who are sick because they are night birds. I think that I will make my mother an owl because she needs it.

2. I am into a knitting craze lately. I am knitting everyday. I found it very meditative, relaxing and rewarding. I am currently knitting a baby blanket for I can't believe I am writing this, for my baby girl due in June.

3. I like to go hiking in the mountains. When I am in the mountains surrounded by nature, I am in my elements. Same thing goes with skiing. I love skiing; the open air, the Alps, breathing deeply and going down the mountains. It is invigorating.

4. I love to look everyday at my dolls seating on my desk; it puts me in a good mood. Little things make me happy. I am a kid at heart despite the fact that I am passed the due age. Nevermind.

5. I love making crafts, especially dolls. I love sewing. I have a major in Women's wear actually. So, sometimes, I make myself clothes too.

6. I love to put makeup on, especially with shimmer for the eye shadow. I love Midnight Cowboys rides again from Urban Decay. It is sparkles in a champagne color. So cool.

7. Getting an apple cider at my favorite bakery in New York City, Once Upon a tart. I go there almost everyday. Drinking apple cider if so healthy and the one they sell is pasteurized, perfect for me.

8. Watercolor is a fun medium. I should get back into it. I have not done a watercolor for a long time now.

9. Making jewelry. I find it rewarding to spend a certain amount of time creating something and using your imagination and then have something unique to wear.

10. Drinking smoothies from Odwalla. It is delicious and so refreshing.
I forgot to mention that I love Champagne, especially Mimosa on Sundays. I don't drink any right now since I am pregnant but in June after the choupinette (little pumpkin) is born, I will definitely drink some.

Bonus: I forgot to mention that I LOVE SWISS CHOCOLATE especially Cailler (Chocmel and Rayon), Ragusa. You can only find those labels in Switzerland. One of my best friend living there was so nice sending me some.

I don't know if the following bloggers would be interested, but I am tagging Sara, Anabela, Tara-Lynn. I wish I knew more people in the blog world but those are some bloggers that I read frequently. New mittens, childhood memories, a funky dress.

My mother gave me a long time ago childhood pictures. I love to look at them. It puts a smile on my face remembering those times. I remember clearly as it was yesterday, when my mother took me by surprise and took that photograph of myself seating on the sofa.It is my favorite picture of all time. What I like about childhood pictures is that children are natural, spontaneous. Already, at a young age, I used to read fashion magazines. I loved and still do to look at beautiful images; I am creating my own imaginary world. Today, I wore this dress which I think is super cool and fun. Also, I finished my new mittens with an Edelweiss embroidered on it. How cool is that!!! I love them. It is perfect actually to wore them today as it is cold outside and chilly.
Last week, I went to the French Institute with the hope of borrowing the other book by Muriel Barbery, La Gourmandise but she is very popular writer right now and this book was out; so I borrowed another book from another writer. From Muriel Barbery, I highly recommend L'elegance de l'herisson (it also comes in English but since French is my mother tongue, I read it in French of course)

Cocooning last Sunday

Last Sunday, we totally hibernated as it was so cold outside. But we went to the movie and saw The Fantastic Mr. Fox. Totally worth it to venture in the cold. I love movies with puppets especially when they are foxes. I love foxes; they are so cute.

I love Urbanoutfitters. They have so many cute outfits. I get their catalog in the mail and I found it so inspiring. I like the fact that Lyell designed some garments for them. Quite nice.

I always like to throw in the mix childhoood pictures. It is amazing that at a young age, I was so blond so does my brother.
Anyway, I am currently reading a book by Paul Auster, City of Glass. It is kind of dark but I like it. Paul Auster is one of my mum's favorite writer. I thought that I have to check it out.

I heart my new handknit hat and images that inspires me

I spent the weekend knitting away my new heart hat; it was knitting calore. I found knitting very therapeutical. Christmas spent in the Sunshine State

This Christmas, my husband and I were in Florida visiting my mum. I finished this cape which I am really proud of. I like it a lot. It will be perfect wearing it at home while watching TV or working on another knitting project. The pearl necklace is a Christmas gift from my mother. My father gave it to her a long time ago. She also gave me this book from Hemingway, a classical, all in French. Happy New year to you all! Cheers!

I wish that everyone including myself would be 10 years younger in my family; I would be in my life where I am now and my grandmother would be able to hear me and my mother would not be sick. Wouldn't be nice? Also, this extra time will allow my family to enjoy the bubble of joy who is expected to arrive at the beginning of June. But things are the way they are and I have to deal with the reality. This Christmas, my husband and I will be celebrating with my mother making the most of it and enjoying this precious moment. Whenever it is a rainy day like yesterday, I try to do fun project to cheer me up and forget about the outside world. I am currently working on my second sockmonkey for the organization FreshArt www.freshartnyc.org

I love my new coat from H&M. I feel like a bear wearing it and it keeps me warm; all in style.

I love also my new ruffle top from H&M also.

Unbelievable!! I received yesterday a package from one of my best friend who lives in Switzerland filled with my favorite goodies, Cailler chocolates, Biberli (gingerbread stuffed with marzipan), a book L'elegance de L'herisson by Muriel Barbery, a pure delight the reading. I am so happy to have a new book to read as after reading the latest book from Sophie Kinsella I was out of inspiration.

Childhood memories

I remember my mother always did intricate gouter (snacks) for school wrapped up in aluminum with funky shapes.

I love Zermatt. There is something magical about this place. You take a little train to go all the way up and then you can sit at a terrace and enjoy the beautiful landscape. I love mountains.

I love skiing. I love the speed and to be in the mountains. I could ski everyday if I could. I feel free when I ski. What is wonderful about skiing is that you use all your muscles. After a good day of skiing, you are tired but happy. And then you are ready for a fondue. I love cheese fondue.

When I was a little girl, I used to wear clogs; not all the time. Aren't they cute with the flower?

Now as an adult, I wear clogs too. I remember my mathematic teacher wearing clogs all year long. He was such a cool dude, very laid back. It is seems that nothing phase him. I like people like that. I feel that when in my life I am with people who are relaxed, at ease, I excel at what I do. Anyway, now, I wear clogs remembering that teacher and having fun with it. I wear clogs with colorful Japanese socks. Although, mine are all in wood, they are really comfortable.

I love the window display of E.R. Butler & Co

WOW! I love this window display. I feel that I am doing scuba diving and discovering all those treasures. The jewelry are beautifully displayed. I would love to work for E.R. Butler as their hardware are so beautiful. I love the craftsmanship. They are like jewelry pieces themselves.

Their store is located in Little Italy in New York. If you pass by Prince Street, check out the window display. I find it so inspiring. A pure delight.

Cafe Gitane is an awesome place to have lunch. It is located in Lolita at 242 Mott Street. I love on the menu the curry chicken sticks with the rice.

It is like a rainbow entering the store Purl in Soho. There are so many beautiful yarns; it is hard to choose from. On a rainy day, it is the perfect place to be if you like knitting or crochet of course. Purl Soho is located at 137 Sullivan Street. After shopping, I usually go for an apple cider at Once Upon a tart.

Once Upon a tart has delicious tarts, sandwiches and salads. A dream.

What inspire me

I love the photo styling of Grace Coddington for the American Vogue because the photo shoots are whimsical and so beautiful. I love Pomeranian puppy; they are hilarious.

This is my favorite collection of all time, Miu Miu. I would dress to have this dress. It is so elegant and architectural; kind of a mix of 1920's with 1940's jazzed up of course.
This is the cape pattern I am currently working on. I look forward to the finish products. I choose purple and brown for the yarn. It should be interesting.

Currently, I am working on an embroidery; it is called the tree of life. It will be a pillow for my mother; a Christmas gift.
The other day with a friend of mine, we went to visit the house and garden of Boscobel in Cold Spring. I have been totally fascinated by this tree. I love autumn foliage. Pure bliss.

Here are photographs of my latest creation. I am very happy the way it came out. It is Hawaii meets downtown Manhattan. I love the puffed flower clasp, very POP ART to me. Pop Art is my favorite art movement. The stone are fluorite. I love the transparency and the color.

I am looking forward to this movie about the life of COCO, Coco before Chanel played by the French actress Audrey Tatou. It is coming out tonight in New York City. Reveries, new creation

For this necklace, I used two coral cabochon that I had at home (I got those from my father).

The centerpiece is from Crystallized Swarovski. The beads surrounding the coral cabochon are also from Swarovski. I am very happy the way it came out. This necklace is best worn with a v-neck sweater. It is a fun and happy necklace. I am in love with my new necklace.

My first time ever on a hot-air balloon. It is so peaceful up there.

We all woke up at 5 am to leave the apartment at 6:30am to be there at 7am. Totally worth it!!!

I love the High Line in New York City. If you are visiting New York City, I definitely recommend checking the High Line. You see the city with a different eye. It is really cool.

On the background here, you can see the Empire State Building. How cool is that!!!
Currently, I am knitting a poncho. Not like planned with the original lace pattern but it will be still cool.
I bought the epattern from Bit of Whimsy Dolls and bought all the fabric except for the feet at Purl in Soho, New York City. Isn't she adorable?
Myself with the new wallpaper from Phillip Jeffries. It is grasscloth. A dream come true!!
One of my favorite new movie, A Lonely place starring Humphrey Bogart and Gloria Graham.

Recipes + New felt necklace

I am into felt lately. It is super fun. Thanks to youtube, I teached myself how to do the eye candy felt. I basically put the felt in a panty hose that I tied and put all of them in a pillow case that I tied also then I let the wash machine do the work.
I did this recipe last night with the Italian chicken and it was a great success.

I did some steamed broccoli on the side. I feel that you can never eat to many vegetables.
Voila, I hope you find this post somehow inspiring. Have a good weekend! I hope it will stop raining. My mother had her bone narrow treatment. She seems happy about it. Although, it is not a cure, we all hope in the family that it will put her disease (which is unfortunately ALS) to remission. At this point, since there is no cure, we can only hope and pray.

Inspiration behind BUBBLE of JOY

I went through a folder that I call Inspiration and I found the original drawing for my painting Bubble of Joy. It's amazing. I forgot all about it. I just wanted to share with you all my sketches. I got inspired by the fish shagreen so when I saw a while back in 2001 an article in the Vogue magazine about shagreen bags and when I found some plastic tubes in a store, I got all excited and went ahead in the making of Bubble of Joy. I drew also inspiration from my childhood seeing my brother creating a painting made of colorful silk paper, like a collage.

I originally called Bubble of Joy, Ray of Sun as you can see below but come to think of it, I decided to call it Bubble of Joy because I love bubble bath, the more bubbles the better and if the bubbles come in color then I am in heaven.

As a tradition, I used to make for each Christmas pillows in the shape of fruits for members of my family. This picture was taken at my aunt place. I am glad to see that after all those years the pillows are still there and in a good shape.

What I have been up to this weekend

I went this weekend to the Renegade in Brooklyn. I was planning to go with a girlfriend but I have not heard from her so I went by myself. But it happen that actually, she did call me; I just did not hear my phone nor did I think of checking my messages. Luckily, she ran into me so then we ended spending the whole day looking for stuff and buying a few without going too crazy. This is a top above that I bought not at the Renegade but on Bedford Street in a shop that sells vintage. I like the color combo, why not.
This is a necklace that I made this weekend for my mother. I mailed it on Saturday along with the aquamarine necklace with the citrine center piece. Since 2007 there is a cloud above my head. I wish I could do something about it. So I made this necklace of semi-precious stones in the hope to bring good energy for my mother upcoming bone narrow treatment in Mexico. I hope that this treatment will be beneficial (this is our last hope) in a sense to put the disease in remission. I am talking about ALS unfortunately. No matter how I feel, it is nothing to compare to my mother that I love dearly. She is courageous. I admire her. My heart goes to Barbara, one of her sister who will be traveling with her. I made her also a necklace because not only she deserves the best but also I believe in the meaning of the stones, so whatever good energy I can send in the cosmos, I will do it.
Thanks for reading. Now, I am going back to one of my purchase of this weekend. I bought this pin up poster from a vendor in Williamsburg. I will buy a frame and then put it in the bathroom. It looks gorgeous. It is not only for guys, don't you think so?

I love Fogal

I went recently to the Fogal store. They sell exclusive hosiery to die for. I don't need any additional tights but the thought of buying something that is well made puts me in a good mood. I love their brochure which explains in detail the fibers. I am reading this brochure in the subway. I had no idea that Vicuna is more expensive than cashmere and also that cashmere comes from a goat and to get the cashmere; they comb the goat. Wow! I love to look at the faces of the vicuna or the baby alpaga; they are so cute; it makes me want to go travel just to give them a big hug.

I love those tights in nude color with a sprinkle of confetti. It is so feminine, elegant and discreet. It is giving the nude tights a fun twist.

Flashback and Christian Lacroix

This is one of my favorite picture of all time. My mother took this picture and got me by surprise as I was not supposed to put my feet on the sofa.

I love reading fashion and interior design magazines since an early age as you can see on this photograph. I imagined in my head a world of beauty and perfection. My specialty at school unfortunately was day dreaming to the point that teachers did not know what to do with me. Eventually later on in life, I pulled myself together and got some kind of diploma but it was a long path with some bigger and smaller bumps until I got to that point.

At the age of 11, I discovered Christian Lacroix without knowing who he was but I loved his dresses so I cut images out of magazines and taped them in my closet. It is only later on while studying fashion that I realized who he was. It is unfortunate what is happening to his fashion house. I am still in denial. I am sure that at some point when things will change economically that he will come back. I love to look at his runway, I mean this is beyond anything more beautiful in the world. It is so whimsical. Looking at his dresses with the unusual color mixes, embroidery, hats let your imagination wonder somewhere very far away from my world.

But it is good to dream. I dream everyday still. His dresses are very Mary Antoinette but in the 21st century.

I love peonies

I am into pink lately and I love peonies for their unique fragrance and their beautiful colors and petals. Their petals are so soft. What is amazing about peonies is that the whole room smells good. Pink is such a good color. It gives me a sense of hope in general.

I think peonies are even more beautiful than the usual suspect roses. What do you think?

Jacques Torres coffee. I can't think of anything else at the present time.

What would you like to get in your hands right now?

Rayon from Cailler, my favorite Swiss chocolate. It is like eating bubbles of chocolate. It melts in your mouth. Simply delicious.

What was your favorite children's book?

I have never been a book reader but I loved the images of the different dresses that Cinderella was wearing. Come to think of it, I used to read in French (French is my mother tongue) les aventures de Martine. Here a picture of me with my grandfather on my father side.

What is on your bedside table?

My flying monkey. I am too old for this but whatever. It is good to be young at heart.

What is your weakness?

Chocolate bunnies at Easter time. Otherwise chocolate in general, preferably Swiss chocolate.

Fushia pink at the present time. I am currently knitting a poncho. Knitting in pink puts me in a good mood.

Current obsession: Vintage. I like this top with the sequins.

I will say vintage. I went recently to a flea market in Brooklyn and found some cool tops. I like the fact that vintage has a story behind it and it is more eco-friendly; also I like to help out whenever I can independent designers, small boutique.

What is your weirdest obsession?

hum! I don't think collecting japanese socks is weird but maybe the fact that in my family everyone expect me is looking forward to eat beef tongue at Christmas; I think this is weird. They order it two weeks in advance to make sure they get some then the tongue cooks for hours. Unfortunately, I had to eat the tongue as a kid, no exception. I thought parents were supposed to make sure kids eat their veggies. Anyway, I am glad to eat whatever I want now.

What do you see outside your window?

Skyscrapers from downtown Manhattan and a little bit of the river. I live in a concrete world.

What animal would you be?

A bird, I think it is awesome to be able to fly, defying gravity. Fly like a bird, being free.

What would you like to learn how to do?

Change a tire, I am totally clueless. Also, how to do a tarte tartin. Just to think of it, I am getting hungry.

What do you want to never happen in life?

Loose a loved ones due to terminal illness.

A girlfriend of mine contacted me and asked me if I wanted to work for her just a couple days this week to help a friend of hers with her interior design business. I said yes immediately. I like to help out people. I used to work full time as a resource librarian for an architectural firm but with this economy,they had to let me go. So, this week, I am going to get busy which is good.

If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would you go?

Hawaii definitely. I love the exotic flowers and the fact that everyone is so relax there, hang loose as they say.

I like day time because everyday is a new day to me, full of hope, a new beginning.

I love silver. It is such a cool idea to paint the walls in silver. I feel that no matter what Andy always look cool. His work is such an inspiration to me especially the artwork that he created with the shimmering background and the colorful shoes floating. He is a genius.
This dress with the zebra print is so fabulous that I would like to make one for myself. It is so chic and elegant. I love the volume and the length. The print makes the dress.
I would love to have silver balloons floating in my apartment for a party, I only wish I knew where to find them but I am sure if I really looked into it that I can find the source after all I used to work as a resource librarian.
Andy looks so cool, effortless. It is nice to see artists in their element, their surroundings.
